Centum Engineering’s Civils department are currently busy carrying out a project based in Aberdeen Scotland on behalf of McLaughlin & Harvey.
The Stonehaven flood Protection Scheme was designed in order to prevent the historical flooding events that local businesses and homes suffered from in the lower area of the River Carron, Scotland. The flooding caused from the River Carron was a huge risk factor to locals that it resulted in residents having to be evacuated on numerous occasions. Centum were involved in ensuring that the scheme ensured there was a 0.5% chance of the reoccurring again.
The Stonehaven Flood Protection Scheme (FPS) is to provide a standard of protection well above the current association of British Insurers requirements, reducing flood risk to 372 residential properties, an emergency site, a school and 2 public utility sites.
The PFS project includes the alteration of five bridges:
- Removing, replacing and raising the red and green bridge
- Removing, refurbishing and reinstating the white bridge in a raised position
- Replacing the Bridgefield Bridge Parapet with a reinforced glass type material
- Raising and widening the Beach Bridge.
Centum’s Involvement
At the request of McLaughlin and Harvey, Centum were involved in helping aid the 0.5% chance of flooding events reoccurring in the lower area of the River Carron. Centums main focus on this project is to ensure the quality of life increases for those in the surrounding area of the River Carron.

- Installing Box Culverts
- Managing the Drainage System
- Forming and placing Scour Protection
The End Result of FPS
As stated, once completed the Stonehaven Flood Protection Scheme will provide a 0.5% chance of occurrence standard protection (1 in 200 year flood event). It will also accommodate a safety margin catering for uncertainties alongside, an allowance for climate change (33% increase to 2080).
